Everyone's "Duvet Dressing" This Winter, and It's So Easy to Copy

Key Takeaways

  • On the red carpet, this winter's "Duvet Dressing" trend shows up as voluminous gowns and literal duvet fabrics.

  • With a comfy top and oversized skirt, you can work the look into your day-to-day life.

I know that the mega-gigantic Super Puff jackets that Aritzia placed in window displays this fall were crafted for shock and awe, but don't tell me there wasn't a piece of you that wanted one for yourself. One of the worst parts of winter (life in general, but especially winter), is having to crawl out of your perfect warm bed and greet the day. It would be more bearable if we were allowed to drag our comforters around with us, and that jacket is essentially a big blanket.

Except... maybe we can wrap ourselves in blankets all day long? In a way, at least. This winter, the fashion world is obsessed with something we're dubbing "Duvet Dressing." On the red carpet, it shows up as voluminous gowns and literal duvet-fabric trains. Out in the world, it looks like wearable yet still oversized skirts and chunky sweaters—still big, still cozy, but a little more realistic.

The Trend

Super voluminous silhouettes have been all over the place for a few months, but the look really showed its reach at the 2025 Gotham Awards on Monday, December 1. Riley Keough, Teyana Taylor, and Rihanna all decided to go big before going home with Keough and Taylor sporting Chanel and Rih in a custom drop-waist Balenciaga gown with a lengthy train.

Before that fateful, chilly evening (it was cold in NYC, the perfect weather for duvet dressing), we saw the style pop up in plenty of other red carpet appearances. Sabrina Carpenter wore a mermaid style gown with a duvet bottom to the 2024 Met Gala, and a year later Serena Williams carried a literal down-filled Moncler cape at the 2025 event.

"Top is good, but why is she carrying a comforter?" asked celebrity hairstylist Cynthia Vanis's daughter, Penny, in one of her iconic fashion review reels. Amazing question, diva. The answer is duvet dressing.

How It Started

Coziness has long been a style aspect we ache for, especially when it's cold out. That being said, we've never seen these level of Duvet Dressing.

Though so many of our current trends can be traced to Y2K inspirations, this one feels more current... unless we're talking about the igloo dress Lizzie McGuire wears in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. 2010s bubble skirts were also big for the last few years, but now we're thinking bigger. The fashion designers are, too. Paloma Wool duvet dressed her models for a show back in March (see the now-available Rupit skirt below) and Balenciaga had options in their Spring/Summer 2026 show.

All options considered, I do think everyone has ultimately been leaning more and more into comfort as the world seems to lean more and more into turmoil. For a while, "which bed would you pick" AI videos were all over my TikTok feed. I couldn't look away, and thus saw fake people crawl under blankets made of marshmallows, snow, noodles, and other soft-yet-impractical materials. Bringing a blanket to the movie theater has also been somewhat normalized, and this is essentially a haute version of that.

How to Wear It

While it's easy to point out massive gowns as the prime example of Duvet Dressing, the trend can easily be applied to everyday situations. Picture a big skirt you can stick a leg out of when you get too warm, paired with a favorite oversized tee or chunky knit sweater.

One of the best parts of the look is that it actually subscribes to European bed-making habits. Everyone gets their own comforter with their individually preferred texture, fabric, and heft. Not everyone runs the same temperature, even in relaxation mode, so it's about what feels right to you. Sarah Paulson and Elle Fanning have worn feathered skirts while duvet dressing, while Jennifer Lawrence opted for double bubble Dior skirt at the Rome Film Festival last month.
